NASA Names New Manager of International Space Station Program

Kirk Shireman has been named manager of NASA's International Space Station Program.

NASA’s springboard for discovery, innovation and deep space exploration has a new chief. The agency has named Kirk Shireman as the new manager of its International Space Station (ISS) Program, based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where Shireman has served as deputy center director since 2013.

"Kirk brings considerable space station experience to this new leadership role. He will manage the overall development, integration and operation of the program,” said William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for NASA’s Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate in Washington. “As program manager, Kirk will work directly with international partners to ensure safe and reliable operation of the orbiting laboratory, and foster continued scientific research that benefits humanity and helps prepare the agency for its journey to Mars.”

Shireman served as deputy ISS program manager from 2006 to 2013, just prior to stepping into the position of deputy center director. He also served as the chair of the ISS Mission Management Team after managing several of its subsystem offices, and managed multiple offices for NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. He earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station and began his career with NASA in 1985.

NASA has recognized Shireman with the agency’s Exceptional Achievement Medal, Silver Snoopy award in 1990 and Presidential Rank Award in 2010. In 2013, the National Space Club awarded Shireman its Eagle Manned Mission Award for his outstanding leadership of the International Space Station.

Shireman succeeds Michael Suffredini, who is leaving the agency to take a position in private industry.

“During Mike’s tenure, the international project successfully completed construction and transitioned into a fully functional microgravity laboratory,” Gerstenmaier said. “Under his leadership, the station opened avenues for a new commercial marketplace in space and established a platform for groundbreaking research.”

Since Suffredini became program manager in 2005, the space station has evolved to become the jumping-off point for NASA's next giant leap in exploration, enabling research and technology developments that will benefit human and robotic exploration of destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, including asteroids and Mars. To date, more than 1,700 research experiments have been conducted aboard the station, bringing together researchers from more than 80 countries in an effort to better the lives of all humanity.

Suffredini joined NASA in January 1989. He has a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

ESA is saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Riccardo Giacconi, Nobel laureate and pioneer of X-ray astronomy, on 9 December at the age of 87.

After his physics studies at the University of Milan, Italy, Riccardo Giacconi moved to the United States in 1956, where he began his trailblazing activity in the then new field of X-ray astronomy. His team worked on developing innovative techniques and instruments to observe X-rays emitted by cosmic sources – observations that must be performed from space due to Earth's atmosphere absorbing this highly energetic radiation.

Using a detector on board a sounding rocket, a team led by Riccardo Giacconi reported in 1962 the discovery of the first X-ray source outside of our Solar System: ScoX-1, in the constellation of Scorpius. The finding sparked the launch of further X-ray detectors on rocket flights and led to Uhuru, the first satellite dedicated to X-ray astronomy, devised by Giacconi himself and developed under his direction.

His ground-breaking contributions to the field of X-ray astronomy continued with leading roles in NASA's Einstein Observatory and Chandra X-ray Observatory. His work had significant impact also on further developments of this field in Europe, including ESA's EXOSAT (1983–1986), the Germany-led ROSAT satellite (1990–1999), and ESA's XMM-Newton X-ray space observatory, launched in 1999 and still operational.

Günther Hasinger, ESA's Director of Science, recalls an intense and fruitful collaboration with Riccardo Giacconi that lasted over a decade, studying data from ROSAT, Chandra, and XMM-Newton to investigate a mysterious, diffuse background that had been observed across the X-ray sky.

“Riccardo was an extraordinary scientist and will be greatly missed. I am very happy to have contributed to his dream of resolving the X-ray background into a myriad of distant active galaxies,” says Hasinger.

A professor at Johns Hopkins University, Giacconi became the first director of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA, and later served as Director General of ESO, the European Southern Observatory.  

For the pioneering contributions to astrophysics that led to the detection of cosmic X-ray sources, Riccardo Giacconi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002, sharing the honour with the discoverers of cosmic neutrinos, Raymond Davis Jr. and Masatoshi Koshiba.

The influential scientific legacy of Giacconi lives on in the new generation of space missions probing the most extreme phenomena in the Universe by combining a variety of cosmic messengers, including the Athena X-ray observatory and the LISA gravitational wave observatory that are currently being developed by ESA.

   Description

   A special patch of sky can be found close to the Big Dipper, in the northern constellation of Ursa Major, also known as the Great Bear. Appearing to contain no stars and hardly any gas clouds from our Milky Way galaxy, this region is called the Lockman Hole. A unique window into the distant Universe, it was discovered in 1986 by astronomer Felix J. Lockman.

   Since its discovery, astronomers have been surveying the Lockman Hole to study the evolution of galaxies throughout cosmic history. Shortly after the launch of ESA’s XMM-Newton X-ray observatory, which lifted off on 10 December 1999, various teams started looking at this patch of the sky with the new telescope. By 2003, they had accumulated over 200 hours of data.

   This image shows a portion of the Lockman Hole based on those observations. Hundreds of distant galaxies can be seen – their light has travelled billions of years before reaching Earth.

   At the core of each of these galaxies is a supermassive black hole, a huge concentration of matter millions to billions of times more massive than the Sun, whose powerful gravity draws large amounts of material from the surroundings. The majority of the black holes depicted here are accreting nearby matter at a very high rate, which results in the emission of light across the electromagnetic spectrum, including X-rays.

   Also portrayed in the image are a few galaxy clusters, gigantic assemblies of galaxies permeated by hot gas that shines brightly in X-rays. The double-lobed red object towards the upper left of the image is one such galaxy cluster: its light has taken over eight billion years to reach us.

   This colour view combines X-ray data collected at energies of 0.5–2 keV (shown in red), 2–4.5 keV (green) and 4.5–10 keV (blue). The image spans half a degree – about the diameter of the full Moon – on the short side; north is up and east to the left. It was first published in 2001, in a paper by G. Hasinger and colleagues.
