Working together for three decades, ESA and Eumetsat have been instrumental in positioning Europe as a leader in observing Earth from space. Continuing to share a vision, the two organisations have signed a statement that will strengthen Europe in meteorology and climate monitoring, and that will help to take the Copernicus programme into the future.

Thanks to the long-standing cooperation between ESA and Eumetsat, Europe has a fleet of meteorological satellites, both in geostationary orbit hovering 36 000 km above the equator and in polar orbit circling Earth.

From their different orbital perspectives, these two types of satellite mission provide essential information for weather forecasts and to understand climate change.

In addition, both organisations play a key role in the European Commission’s environmental monitoring Copernicus programme where ESA develops the suite of Sentinel satellites, which make up the core of this monitoring network, and Eumetsat operates and delivers the data from a number of these missions.
Statement signature

A statement, signed yesterday by ESA’s Director General, Jan Woerner, and Eumetsat’s Director General, Alain Ratier, at the European Space Week in Tallinn, Estonia, sets out the organisations’ shared goals for the future and their continued cooperation.

Jan Woerner said, “We have been cooperating with Eumetsat since the 1980s to ensure an excellent source of satellite data for meteorology. We built the first and second generation series of the geostationary Meteosat missions and the series of polar-orbiting MetOp missions, which Eumetsat operates.

“As our cooperative venture continues, we are now focusing on the two follow-on series, Meteosat Third Generation and MetOp Second Generation, which both offer enhancements and ensure the continuity of essential information for global weather forecasting and climate monitoring for decades to come.

“As part our United Space in Europe philosophy, the statement what we have signed is a declaration of our continued commitment to strengthening Europe’s strategy for space.”
MetOp Second Generation

Meteosat Third Generation comprises six satellites working in pairs: four imaging and two sounding satellites. The Copernicus Sentinel-4 is to be carried on the sounder satellites.

MetOp Second Generation is also a series of six satellites that work in pairs: the ‘A’ type carries optical instruments while the ‘B’ type focuses on microwave sensors. The Copernicus Sentinel-5 instrument is to be carried on type A.

The agreement highlights the importance of space-based data to Europe’s economy and competitiveness. In addition, it will increase European autonomy in security, defence, climate monitoring, and the management of natural disasters.

Alain Ratier added, “Our cooperation offers meteorological satellite systems that have the highest impact on weather forecasts and that therefore create socio-economic benefits of more than €5 billion a year in the EU.

“This is the foundation for extending our partnership to atmospheric composition and ocean monitoring for Copernicus, together with the EC.”

For the EC’s Copernicus programme, ESA and Eumetsat seek to ensure a new standard of air-quality forecasting so that Europe can better protect the health of citizens with the Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5 missions.

The current Sentinel-3 mission and the future Sentinel-6 mission, which are operated by Eumetsat, are expected to boost the development of operational oceanography, and a 10-year extension of the existing 25-year climate record in light of the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

In addition, both organisations will coordinate efforts to improve Copernicus data accessibility and user uptake to create new business and innovation opportunities.

Finally, ESA and Eumetsat will implement plans with the EC on the deployment of additional Sentinel satellites to monitor the oceans and atmosphere, in particular to monitor carbon dioxide.

Arianespace has launched a Vega rocket to deliver an Earth observation satellite into orbit for the Kingdom of Morocco.

Liftoff of Vega’s 11th mission from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana came at 01:42 GMT on 8 November (02:42 CET; 22:42 local time on 7 November).

With a mass at liftoff of 1110 kg, Mohammed VI-A was manoeuvred into its target Sun-synchronous orbit about 55 minutes into the mission after a series of burns of Vega’s upper stage.

Complying with debris regulations to help keep space clean, Vega’s upper stage fired a final time to burn up high in the atmosphere over the ocean.

Vega is a 30 m-high, four-stage vehicle designed to accommodate small scientific and Earth observation payloads of 300–2500 kg, depending on the orbit.

A constellation of small satellites that provide data on Earth’s ice and soil moisture content to complement the Sentinel fleet took the top prize at this year’s Copernicus Masters Competition.

In its seventh year, the competition seeks new ideas for services, business concepts and applications based on Earth observation satellite data.

The vast amounts of data produced by Europe’s Copernicus programme and its Sentinel satellites open the door to countless products and applications in a wide array of business sectors.

The awards ceremony took place yesterday in Tallinn, Estonia, in front of an international audience during European Space Week as part of the Satellite Masters Conference & Horizon 2020 Space Info Day.

The winning idea, FSSCat, was designed by a joint team from Spain’s Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona and the Estonian start-up Golbriak Space OÜ and proposes a constellation of two CubeSats, each about the size of a shoebox.

The two satellites would collect data to complement the Copernicus Sentinels and, in particular, to support the Copernicus Land and Marine Environment services using a state-of-the-art dual microwave payload as well as a multispectral optical payload.
Winning team

As overall Copernicus Masters winner, the team was awarded a €10 000 prize which includes a VIP trip to attend a satellite launch in Kourou.

In addition, the team won the Sentinel Small Satellite Challenge, which offers €1 million to design and build the two satellites within 12 months, along with free launch services and a cash prize of €10 000.

“The Copernicus Masters competition has, once again, clearly demonstrated its potential to drive the innovative use of Earth observation data and promote the use of Copernicus data to new user groups,” said ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Josef Aschbacher.

“Since the beginning of the competition in 2011 we have had exciting challenges. I am especially delighted that this year’s winner of the overall competition is the ESA Challenge winner, taking the competition to new heights benefiting from the Copernicus Masters.”

An additional 13 ideas were awarded prizes totalling €600 000 in the form of cash, consulting, data packages and other benefits. The winners also have the opportunity to ready their ideas for the marketplace at one of ESA’s 16 Business Incubation Centres across Europe.

Le mithraïsme était un culte monothéiste3 antérieur de plus de 1 500 ans au christianisme primitif, mais qui connut son apogée à Rome au moment de la naissance de ce dernier. Il a fait l'objet de persécutions systématiques dans l'Empire romain à la fin du IVe siècle parce qu'il concurrençait le christianisme, avec lequel il présente certaines similitudes (le monothéisme, et certains rites comme l'eucharistie)4.

La tauroctonie est une représentation religieuse en relation avec l'univers ; le dieu indo-iranien Mithra, dont le culte connut un véritable essor à Rome, égorge un taureau sur l'ordre du Soleil qu'il regarde par-dessus son épaule : le sang de ce taureau fertilise le monde. Les forces du Mal représentées par un chien, un serpent et un scorpion mordent l'animal pour s'opposer au sacrifice et à la fécondation du monde.

Cette scène est d'ordre cosmique et faisait partie du culte du dieu Mithra. Sous la Rome antique, ce culte initiatique fut véhiculé dans tout l'Empire par les légions romaines.

Le mithraïsme se développa à Rome probablement à partir de la seconde moitié du Ier siècle de notre ère, sans qu'on connaisse exactement les conditions de son introduction dans l'empire. Selon l'historien Plutarque - et des historiens modernes valident cette thèse - il serait arrivé en Italie à l'occasion des expéditions de Pompée en Orient contre Mithridate, et contre les pirates de Cilicie5. Toutefois il semblerait que son introduction ait été un peu plus tardive et diverses hypothèses existent à ce sujet6,7.

Mithra était particulièrement populaire dans les armées, essentiellement chez les soldats et les centurions, bien que quelques légats aient comptés parmi ses dévots. Beaucoup d'esclaves et d'affranchis faisaient également partie de ses fidèles. Sénateurs et chevaliers semblent par contre avoir été assez réservés à son endroit ; cependant, dans un temple de Mithra à Rome, des inscriptions datant du IIe siècle nomment deux supérieurs de la communauté mithriaque, tous deux chevaliers8. Les femmes étaient probablement exclues de son culte9. Celui-ci s'est principalement répandu en Italie, en Grande Bretagne et sur les rives du Rhin et du Danube. En revanche il semble n'avoir connu qu'un essor limité et tardif dans la partie orientale de l'Empire romain10

On possède peu d'éléments sur le contenu du mithraïsme et les valeurs qu'il véhiculait. À l'heure actuelle, on estime que les notions d'amitié et de loyauté étaient primordiales. Seules deux scènes de la geste de Mithra sont actuellement bien connues et identifiées : sa naissance et la tauroctonie.

Mithra, qui s'est créé lui-même à partir de la roche (ce qui explique l'emploi à son sujet de l'adjectif pétrogène), est à la fois primogenitus et autogenitus. Cette scène est représentée sur de nombreuses statues.

La tauroctonie est sans conteste la scène la plus représentée dans les sanctuaires du dieu, qu'il s'agisse de sculptures, de bas-reliefs ou de fresques. Il semble qu'après avoir chassé le taureau, Mithra l'ait rattrapé et tué. Le sacrifice du taureau serait à l'origine de la vie, le sang de l'animal fertilisant la terre.

Le mithraïsme est un culte à mystères. Le fidèle devait subir une initiation pour être pleinement accepté parmi les plus fervents fidèles. Ce type de culte, contrairement à ce que l'on a longtemps cru, n'est pas d'origine « orientale » mais grecque11. Les initiés portaient chacun un grade bien précis : corbeau (corax), fiancé ou jeune marié (nymphus), soldat (miles), lion (leo), Perse (Perses), Héliodrome (Heliodromus) et Père (pater). Ces grades sont principalement attestés en Italie, notamment par de nombreuses inscriptions et par la mosaïque du sanctuaire de "Sette Sfere" à Ostie12, ainsi que grâce au témoignage de saint Jérôme13.

Origine

Mitra est une divinité indo-iranienne. Plusieurs documents hittites attestent son existence dès le IIe millénaire av. J.-C. Il fait l'objet, dans la Perse antique, d'un culte important qui commence à être un peu mieux connu1. Les travaux de Georges Dumézil ont montré que les dieux Mitra et Varuna (Contrat et Serment) forment un couple dans le panthéon indo-iranien. Ils sont les représentants de la fonction souveraine et à Mitra-Contrat revient la souveraineté juridique, Varuna disposant de la souveraineté magique. Tous deux ont pour fonction de veiller sur la vérité et sur le cours du monde2.

Une révolution religieuse dont la date n'est pas connue a eu lieu en Iran et a transformé en démons certains dieux. Mitra devient alors le yazata- (« dieu ») Mithra et Varuna devient le « Seigneur Sage », Ahura Mazda, le dieu suprême du mazdéisme2. Une seconde réforme religieuse, celle de Zarathustra survenue au cours du Ier millénaire av. J.-C., a orienté la religion mazdéenne vers le monothéisme au bénéfice d'Ahura Mazda entouré d'un certain nombre d'entités comme Mitra « Bonne pensée »2, ce dernier n'étant plus attesté que par quelques formules2.

Mithra ou Mithras est originellement un dieu indo-iranien, fils d'Anahita. Son culte connut un important développement dans la Rome antique aux IIe et IIIe siècles de notre ère.
