This image of the young volcanic region of Elysium Planitia on Mars [10.3°N, 159.5°E] was taken on 14 April 2021 by the CaSSIS camera on the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). The two blue parallel trenches in this image, called Cerberus Fossae, were thought to have formed by tectonic processes. They run for almost one thousand km over the volcanic region. In this image, CaSSIS is looking straight down into one of these 2 km-wide fissures. The floor here is a few hundred metres deep and is filled with coarse-grained sand, likely basaltic in composition, which appears blue in the CaSSIS false-colour composite image. The flat volcanic plains nearby are punctured by small impact craters, which expose possibly the same basaltic materials that we see within Cerberus Fossae. TGO arrived at Mars in 2016 and began its full science mission in 2018. The spacecraft is not only returning spectacular images, but also providing the best ever inventory of the planet’s atmospheric gases, and mapping the planet’s surface for water-rich locations. It will also provide data relay services for the second ExoMars mission comprising the Rosalind Franklin rover and Kazachok platform, when it arrives on Mars in 2023.

Parler avec les populations ! Enquêter sur toutes les allégations !
En République démocratique du Congo (RDC), huit députés nationaux sont attendus, ce jeudi 9 septembre, à Bukavu, au Sud-Kivu. Cette mission d’information mandatée par le président de l’Assemblée nationale, Christophe Mboso, est dirigée par le député de cette province, Jean-Claude Kibala et doit faire toute la lumière sur la nécessité de suspendre, ou non, six sociétés chinoises, accusées de bafouer les lois du pays. Cette décision a été prise par le gouverneur du Sud-Kivu mais elle est contestée sur la forme au niveau national par la ministre des Mines qui estime que ce n’est pas de son ressort. Pour le chef de la mission d’information parlementaire, il est trop tôt pour trancher la querelle juridique entre le gouverneur de la province du Sud-Kivu et la ministre des Mines. L’honorable Jean-Claude Kibala estime que les lois du pays accordent des prérogatives aux deux personnalités et que l’important, c’est plutôt de s’enquérir de la situation sur le terrain. La mission d’information promet d’enquêter sur toutes les allégations, y compris sur la présence d'officiers qui sécurisent les concessions. Le gouverneur du Sud-Kivu rappelle, lui, avoir pris cette mesure de suspension à titre conservatoire. Il dit attendre le résultat des différentes enquêtes avant de vouloir à nouveau s’exprimer sur le dossier. La ministre des Mines avait écrit le mois dernier au Premier ministre pour se plaindre de la suspension alors que ses inspecteurs travaillaient sur le dossier pour faire la lumière sur la situation de ces entreprises chinoise.

Dans l’est du pays, neuf entreprises minières, dont six chinoises, ont été temporairement suspendues par les autorités provinciales. Selon le gouverneur de la province du Sud-Kivu, il s’agit de remettre de l’ordre dans l’industrie de l’exploitation d’or. Notamment dans le territoire de Mwenga qui a été le théâtre de tensions entre communautés locales et opérateurs étrangers actifs dans l’exploitation de l’or. Selon le gouverneur du Sud-Kivu, de nombreuses entreprises étrangères travaillant dans la province fonctionnent en toute illégalité. C’est en tout cas ce qui ressort d’un rapport interne. Certaines entreprises sont installées dans la province depuis plusieurs années. « Elles débarquent dans notre province juste avec un permis de recherche, constate le gouverneur du Sud-Kivu, Théo Ngwabidje Kasi. Et une fois sur place, elles exploitent illégalement nos mines. » Toujours selon le gouverneur, certaines entreprises ont prétendu venir apporter un appui aux coopératives minières locales. Mais aujourd’hui, elles sont dans la production semi-industrielle. Les communautés locales se plaignent également des cas de pollution des rivières. Le gouverneur espère que les conclusions de ce rapport vont permettre à la justice de se saisir de certains cas et d'assainir ce secteur. Cette opération de contrôle devrait prochainement s’étendre aux territoires de Shabunda, Fizi et Kalehe.
Finding and collecting the best lunar samples will be a major task for the next astronauts on the Moon. ESA’s Pangaea training campaign launches today to equip astronauts with a geologist’s eye on the Moon – humanity’s next space destination to help us understand more about our Solar System. The course has come of age in its fourth edition with a greater focus on Earth’s only natural satellite. “There has never been a better time to run this course now that we are going to the Moon with NASA’s Artemis missions,” says Loredana Bessone, Pangaea’s project lead. From selecting a landing site and planning a lunar expedition to the search for local resources, Pangaea is “an excellent foundational course to prepare astronauts for collecting rocks on the Moon and to understand why we are going back,” says training coordinator Samuel Payler. Participants of this year’s campaign are ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen, NASA astronaut Kathleen Rubins and EAC engineer Robin Eccleston. Background lessons are followed by field trips to the Italian Dolomites, the Ries crater in Germany and the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote, Spain, to unravel lunar and martian features on Earth. A big fan of adventure expeditions, Andreas is looking forward to becoming a competent field scientist. “Any human mission to the Moon will have geology as one of its primary goals. This makes this course very relevant, especially for the next class of ESA astronauts,” he says. Kathleen is part of the group of Artemis astronauts and could become the first American woman to land on the Moon. This microbiologist has spent a total of 300 days on the International Space Station and became the 60th woman to fly in space in 2016. The Pangaea team is very motivated to train them “to be partners in Moon science and not just astronauts executing orders from Earth. They will build realistic lunar missions with us,” explains Samuel. Getting better – and more real – all the time !!! Pangaea 2021 gets more real and visual with new tools. “We are bringing in virtual reality for ‘augmented science’ and more efficient operations,” says Francesco Sauro, Pangaea’s technical course director. Back to the Moon and then onto Mars. Participants will wear a virtual reality headset to immerse themselves in a real martian landscape. Together with images and dozens of 3D maps, the trainees will see a combination of ground truth information and satellite images with the PLANetary MAPping project (PLANMAP) running behind the scenes. “The crew will feel closer to a real planetary expedition and will choose their own path. It is quite a unique and powerful lesson, never done before in Pangaea,” explains Francesco.
ESA is also developing a digital tool for efficient lunar expeditions. The Electronic Field Book (EFB) is an all-in-one information system that works on hand-held devices, a sort of space tablet, used to record science in remote environments. The app helps astronauts identify minerals, record each step of the space sortie, communicate with scientists on Earth and integrate inputs from microscopes and 360-degree cameras. Three sites, one mission !!! Some of Europe’s top planetary scientists are giving lessons during this geological, astrobiological and operational field-training course. “We have improved our training flow with lessons increasing in complexity as the participants build up their geology knowledge,” adds Francesco. The instructors will also talk about the diversity and tenacity of life and how to detect it during future planetary missions. Amid strict COVID-19 safety guidelines, participants will also learn about planetary protection. “How to collect samples and prevent contamination is paramount,” states Samuel.

Le sens de cette mission montée dans la précipitation continue d’interroger de même que son résultat. Comment la première puissance militaire du monde a-t-elle pu être vaincue par une guérilla inspirée d’un islam d’un autre âge ? La question a été particulièrement ressentie en France, en raison de notre présence au Sahel qui n’est pas sans faire craindre une issue comparable. Les pays sahéliens, touchés par le phénomène jihadiste, suivent avec attention la situation et les derniers événements en Afghanistan, où les talibans ont pris le contrôle le week-end dernier. Une partie de la population craint de voir le scénario afghan se reproduire dans leur propre pays. Pourtant, les deux situations sont différentes, même s'il existe aussi des points de convergence. This week, many of our NASA assets provided forecasters with information to incorporate into their analysis of Hurricane Ida. We used satellite imagery, data visualizations, and photographs from the International Space Station to analyze the storm and get vital information to disaster responders to inform recovery efforts. Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Aug. 29, affecting our Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. No injuries have been reported, but both locations sustained damage. Stennis was able to open for some operations while Michoud remains closed this week as teams conducted detailed damage assessments and initial cleanup work. Get the latest with our Michoud Hurricane Ida Status Reports. Assessments continue at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility following Hurricane Ida. Damage to the roofs of several buildings have been confirmed and includes loose panels, panels removed during the storm, debris and water damage. Michoud remains on limited generator power for essential areas. Due to no power in the factory, assessments inside have been limited and by flashlight only. No damage has been observed to date to flight hardware with inspections inside the factory to continue for the next several days. Crews will also continue assessments and inspections across the facility grounds and buildings. Debris remains across campus and on roadways and is being cleared by on-site teams. The facility remains closed and access limited to essential personnel. Three days after Hurricane Ida brought fierce wind, rain, and storm surges to Louisiana, large swaths of the state are enduring electric power blackouts due to downed lines and damaged transmission towers. According to news sources, many people are also going without access to running water and gasoline due to damaged infrastructure. A team of scientists from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) has mapped the outages using satellite data. The images above show nighttime lights data acquired on August 9 and 31 by the Suomi NPP satellite. The base maps make use of data collected by the Landsat 8 satellite. “The imagery is surprisingly cloud-free. It usually would take at least 48 hours for skies to clear up enough after an event like this,” added Miguel Román, a USRA scientist and leader of the Black Marble Project. “At this aftermath stage, Black Marble imagery is capturing a lot of diesel-power/backup generation, which utilities do not monitor.” By the morning of September 1, 2021, more than 985,000 customers were reported without power in Louisiana according to data compiled by PowerOutage.US from publicly accessible sources. (The total counts homes and businesses, not people.) Another 33,000 customers were without power in Mississippi. VIIRS has a low-light sensor—the day/night band—that measures light emissions and reflections. This capability has made it possible to distinguish the intensity, types, and sources of lights and to observe how they change. The data are then processed by the Black Marble team to account for changes in the landscape (such as flooding), the atmosphere, and the Moon phase, and to filter out stray light from sources that are not electric lights. Precision is critical for studies with night lights. Raw, unprocessed images can be misleading because moonlight, clouds, pollution, seasonal vegetation—even the position of the satellite—can change how light is reflected and can distort observations.
