Automated sea vehicles for monitoring the oceans

A new company from ESA Business Incubation Centre Harwell in UK has developed an autonomous boat that is propelled by the waves and carries ocean sensors powered by solar energy.

Advances in ocean monitoring are improving our understanding of the seas and environment, including marine life, sea temperatures, pollution and weather.

However, fuel, maintenance and manpower for research ships are costly, and sea conditions restrict where measurements can be made.

The AutoNaut start-up from ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) Harwell has come up with a revolutionary automated surface vessel to collect data for long periods at a fraction of the cost.

The vessel is propelled by a unique wave foil that harvests energy from the natural pitching and rolling at the sea. The vessel is propelled forward by four keel-mounted foils, positioned at the fore and aft.
Preparing AutoNaut

The foils are articulated and sprung for consistent performance ensuring that the vessel can move forward in all wave directions. Speeds of 2-5.5km/h are maintained under most sea conditions and hydrodynamic testing has refined the technology with field-trials proven its robustness in stormy seas.

It is one of the world’s first small commercial applications of wave propulsion and it can operate at sea for many weeks at a time, covering hundreds of kilometres in a week in areas and conditions too hazardous for humans.

It is so quiet that it can measure the whistles and clicks of dolphins over large areas. Using satellite networks, the AutoNaut receives its instructions from anywhere in the world. It can carry cutting-edge, solar-powered sensors to capture raw measurements, process the data onboard and then send them back to the operators via satellite.

“If a satellite radar picks up suspected oil spills our AutoNaut can verify it on the spot, map the extent and take water measurements for relay back to shore,” said Phil Johnson from the company.

The team recently completed its two-year incubation at the ESA BIC. There, they used highly specialised satellite navigation and communication systems to refine their navigation and control capabilities, and deliver near-realtime data collected from the sensors.

Backed by ESA’s £41 500 grant and business support, Autonaut has already taken part in a number of missions with the Royal Navy, the National Oceanographic Centre, the UK Met Office, and offshore engineering industries.

“AutoNaut is revolutionary and will help us to better understand our environment at a fraction of the cost of manned technologies,” said company director David Maclean.

“Our society and economy rely on accurate data sourced from our oceans on a consistent and non-interfering basis, and having access to the business support, technology and expertise has made a massive difference to us in our journey towards commercialising our product.”

Sue O’Hare, operations manager of ESA BIC Harwell, added, “AutoNaut is an inspirational example of how space and technology can be applied to address our research and industrial challenges.

“Turning a game-changing idea like this into a viable commercial reality is a massive challenge in itself. I’m thrilled that we have provided AutoNaut with the right environment to do this, and I wish them every success as they take their business to the next level.”

ESA has 18 centres throughout Europe helping entrepreneurs and start-ups to spin-off space technology and to exploit satellite data for new terrestrial applications.

Planning Cassini’s Grand Finale: A Retrospective

Mission planning is a core strength of JPL engineering, along with deep space communications and navigation. This month’s talk, by Cassini mission planner Erick Sturm, will provide a look back at the various scenarios and contingency plans the Cassini team made as they steered the spacecraft into unexplored space during its 2017 Grand Finale. Sturm will discuss how the possible scenarios -- some of which could have been mission-ending -- compared to the mission as it was actually flown, along with some science highlights from the finale.

According to this year’s Global Risk Report by the World Economic Forum, water crises are one of the five biggest risks to society. ESA is working with development banks to help water-resource authorities use information from satellites to manage this precious resource.

With water under pressure from over-exploitation and pollution, one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

While progress is being made, there are ever-increasing demands for freshwater, especially for agriculture. In fact, the Food and Agriculture Organization states that 70% of the freshwater drawn is used for agriculture alone. And, with a growing global population to feed, this could rise.

Water security is of particular significance for African countries subjected to the effects of climate change and increasing populations.

Information from satellites observing Earth can map and monitor the vital resource, as the video below explains.

Through its TIGER and Earth Observation for Sustainable Development initiatives, ESA develops applications in close collaboration with its African and international partners to respond to the urgent need for reliable water information in their countries.

The initiatives also support research, capacity building and training within both national and transboundary water authorities.

ESA’s Benjamin Koetz said, “While we work continuously to help authorities and companies to use information from satellites to safeguard water, today is World Water Day – so a good occasion to draw our attention to this fundamental but fragile resource.

“By providing information on water extent and quality, flooding, evapotranspiration and soil moisture, satellites are an essential tool to remind us every day what vulnerable resource water is.”

An example of this is the recent issue of water scarcity in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Here, water levels in the Theewaterskloof Dam have dropped dramatically in recent years. The dam is the major source of water for domestic and agricultural uses in the region including the city of Cape Town.

Over the last year, this lack of water has caused the production of grain to drop by more than 36% and the production of wine grapes to drop by 20%, for example.

It is estimated that the dam would need to receive at least three years of good winter rainfall for it to return to its earlier healthy level.

As part of the TIGER initiative, the Stellenbosch University is applying machine-learning software to data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 missions to monitor the situation.

Tsitsi Bangira from the university said, “Monitoring the rise and fall of freshwater in the Western Cape region is essential, particularly in times of scarcity, so that this important resource can be managed appropriately.

“Our research shows that the frequent observations we get from the Sentinels along with machine-learning software can provide the information that is needed to do this at a regional scale.”

To help stimulate and understand the research challenges of monitoring our global water resources, members of the international science community will attend ESA’s Mapping Water Bodies from Space workshop next week.
