Solar Storms Can Drain Electrical Charge Above Earth

New research on solar storms finds that they not only can
cause regions of excessive electrical charge in the upper
atmosphere above Earth's poles, they also can do the exact
opposite: cause regions that are nearly depleted of electrically
charged particles. The finding adds to our knowledge of how
solar storms affect Earth and could possibly lead to improved
radio communication and navigation systems for the Arctic.

A team of researchers from Denmark, the United States
and Canada made the discovery while studying a solar storm
that reached Earth on Feb. 19, 2014. The storm was observed
to affect the ionosphere in all of Earth's northern latitudes.
Its effects on Greenland were documented by a network of global
navigation satellite system, or GNSS, stations as well as
geomagnetic observatories and other resources.
Attila Komjathy of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
Pasadena, California, developed software to process the GNSS
data and helped with the data processing.
The results were published in the journal Radio Science.

Solar storms often include an eruption on the sun called a coronal
mass ejection, or CME. This is a vast cloud of electrically charged particles
hurled into space that disturbs the interplanetary magnetic field in
our solar system. When these particles and the magnetic disturbances
encounter Earth's magnetic field, they interact in a series of complex
physical processes, and trigger perturbations in the Earth's magnetic field.
Those perturbations are called geomagnetic storms. The interactions
may cause unstable patches of excess electrons in the ionosphere,
an atmospheric region starting about 50 miles (80 kilometers)
above Earth's surface that already contains ions and electrons.

The 2014 geomagnetic storm was a result of two powerful Earth-directed
CMEs. The storm initially produced patches of extra electrons in
the ionosphere over northern Greenland, as usual. But just south of
these patches, the scientists were surprised to find broad areas
extending 300 to 600 miles (500 to 1,000 kilometers) where the electrons
were "almost vacuumed out," in the words of Per Hoeg of the
National Space Research Institute at the Technical University of Denmark,
Lyngby. These areas remained depleted of electrons for several days.

The electrons in the ionosphere normally reflect radio waves back
to ground level, enabling long-distance radio communications.
Both electron depletion and electron increases in this layer
can possibly cause radio communications to fail, reduce the accuracy
of GPS systems, damage satellites and harm electrical grids.

"We don't know exactly what causes the depletion," Komjathy said.
"One possible explanation is that electrons are recombining with
positively charged ions until there are no excess electrons.
There could also be redistribution -- electrons being displaced
and pushed away from the region, not only horizontally but vertically."

The paper is titled "Multiinstrument observations of a geomagnetic storm
and its effects on the Arctic ionosphere: A case study of
the 19 February 2014 storm." Lead author Tibor Durgonics is a doctoral
student at the Technical University of Denmark. Richard Langley
(University of New Brunswick, Canada) provided data sets
and interpretation.

journey from the outer solar system back to our home planet.
The objects encountered along the way are manmade. Originally designed
to explore the universe, these are now a challenge for modern space flight.
An estimated number of 700,000 objects larger than 1 cm and 170 million objects
larger than 1mm are expected to reside in Earth orbits.

The video gives a closer look at the different regions used
for space flight and explains how mitigation and removal measures could preserve
future usage of these orbits.

'Detergent' Molecules May Drive Recent Methane Changes

A new NASA- and Department of Energy-funded study finds
that recent increases in global methane levels observed since 2007
are not necessarily due to increasing emissions, but instead may be
due to changes in how long methane remains in the atmosphere
after it is emitted.

The second most important human-produced greenhouse gas
after carbon dioxide, methane is colorless, odorless and can be
hard to track. The gas has a wide range of sources, from decomposing
biological material to leaks in natural gas pipelines. In the early 2000s,
atmospheric scientists studying methane found that its global
concentration -- which had increased for decades, driven by methane
emissions from fossil fuels and agriculture -- leveled off as the sources
of methane reached a balance with its destruction mechanisms.
The methane levels remained stable for a few years, then unexpectedly
started rising again in 2007, a trend that is still continuing.

Previous studies of the renewed increase have focused
on high-latitude wetlands or fossil fuels, Asian agricultural growth,
or tropical wetlands as potential sources of the increased emissions.
But in a study published today in the early online edition of the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers
at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Caltech
in Pasadena, California; and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
also in Pasadena, suggest that methane emissions might not
have increased dramatically in 2007 after all.

The researchers used long-term measurements of methane,
its isotopes and methylchloroform (1,1,1,-trichloroethane, a chemical
compound that serves as a proxy for estimating how long methane
remains in the atmosphere) from numerous global ground stations.
From these data, the scientists were able to determine sources
of methane and how quickly it is destroyed in Earth's atmosphere.
They found that the most likely explanation for the recent increase
has less to do with methane emissions than previously thought
and more to do with changes in the availability of the hydroxyl
radical (OH), which breaks down methane in the atmosphere.
As such, the amount of hydroxyl in the atmosphere has an impact
on global methane concentrations. If global levels
of hydroxyl decrease, global methane concentrations
will increase -- even if methane emissions remain constant.

"Think of the atmosphere like a kitchen sink with the faucet
running," said co-corresponding author Christian Frankenberg,
an associate professor of environmental science and engineering
at Caltech and a JPL research scientist. "When the water level
inside the sink rises, that can mean that you've opened up
the faucet more. Or it can mean that the drain is blocking up.
You have to look at both."

In this analogy, the hydroxyl radical represents the draining
mechanism in the sink. It is highly reactive and acts like a detergent
in the atmosphere, triggering a series of chemical reactions
that culminate in the formation of carbon dioxide and water vapor.

In tracking the observed changes in methane and the inferred
changes in hydroxyl, Frankenberg and his colleagues noted that
fluctuations in hydroxyl concentrations can explain some of
the recent methane trends. However, the authors cannot explain
the causes for the global changes in hydroxyl concentrations seen i
n the past decade. They say future independent studies are needed
to quantify year-to-year variations in the hydroxyl radical and
their potential drivers. They would also like to see the trends
they detected verified with more detailed studies of the sources
and the destruction mechanisms of methane, particularly in the tropics.

"The tropics are the tricky part," Frankenberg said.
"They're very complex in terms of methane emissions and destruction."
Methane has the shortest lifetime in the tropics due to
the large amounts of water vapor and radiation there.
But because tropical areas are often remote and cloud-covered
(thwarting satellite observation), they remain understudied, he said.

The study is titled "Ambiguity in the causes for decadal trends
in atmospheric methane and hydroxyl." Frankenberg's collaborators
on the paper are lead author and Harvard graduate student
Alexander Turner, Daniel Jacob of Harvard, and Paul Wennberg
of Caltech. A NASA Carbon Monitoring System grant co-funded the study.

Grâce à l’ESA, des avions utilisent des satellites de communication
pour partager des informations en temps réel avec d’autres
avions et des stations sol afin d’améliorer les opérations de vol.

Atmosphère, une PME toulousaine basée en France et
en Allemagne, a conçu le service Planet pour fournir
des données météorologiques en vol à des avions légers.

Le service Planet, basé sur des satellites de communication,
a été développé avec l’aide de l’ESA pour les communications
sol-bord en aviation légère. Il est maintenant utilisé par des
avions de plus grande capacité et des giravions dans le monde entier.
Mesure de la formation en haute altitude de cristaux de glace

Planet est actuellement utilisé pour la communication de données
pendant des opérations de vol spéciales. Celles-ci vont
de la recherche scientifique au transport aérien en passant
par des missions en hélicoptère.

L’Agence spatiale française, le CNES, a testé en vol un concept
permettant de collecter et de transmettre des données
de machine à machine via un avion.
Planet a synchronisé des balises au sol avec les passes d’un avion,
et vérifié que les systèmes collectaient les données requises.

Planet a des applications multiples. Airbus l’a utilisé en Asie,
en Europe et en Amérique du Nord pour étudier la formation
en haute altitude de cristaux de glace sur les avions.
Planet a fourni des images satellites infra rouge en fausses couleurs
ainsi que des cartes de givrage en temps réel pour optimiser les essais.

La NASA a utilisé Planet le mois dernier lors d’une campagne
de tests de technologies et de procédures permettant
d’optimiser la capacité d’arrivée des avions dans les aéroports
aux heures de pointe. Planet pendant le test de la NASA

Grâce au satellite, Planet améliore la coordination,
la communication et l’échange de données en temps réel entre
un avion et les équipes au sol.

De grands instituts, comme le centre allemand de
recherche aérospatiale (DLR), utilisent régulièrement
ce service pour des opérations de recherche atmosphérique.
Celle-ci implique que plusieurs avions volent simultanément
dans la même zone en prenant des mesures avec
de nombreux instruments scientifiques.
Grâce à Planet, les avions peuvent être coordonnés
efficacement sur la base des informations
transmises au sol en temps réel.

NASA Missions Provide New Insights into 'Ocean Worlds' in Our Solar System

We once thought oceans made our planet unique, but we’re now coming
to realize that ‘ocean worlds’ are all around us. Video credit: NASA

Two veteran NASA missions are providing new details about icy,
ocean-bearing moons of Jupiter and Saturn, further heightening
the scientific interest of these and other “ocean worlds” in our
solar system and beyond. The findings are presented in papers
published Thursday by researchers with NASA’s Cassini mission
to Saturn and Hubble Space Telescope.

In the papers, Cassini scientists announce that a form
of chemical energy that life can feed on appears to exist
on Saturn’s moon Enceladus, and Hubble researchers report
additional evidence of plumes erupting from Jupiter’s moon Europa.

“This is the closest we’ve come, so far, to identifying
a place with some of the ingredients needed for a habitable environment,”
said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator
for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters in Washington.
”These results demonstrate the interconnected nature
of NASA’s science missions that are getting us closer
to answering whether we are indeed alone or not.”

Thanks to ESA, aircraft are using satcoms to share realtime information
with other aircraft and ground stations to improve flight operations.

The satcom-based Planet service, developed
with ESA’s help by the Atmosphere company, was originally
intended to provide light aircraft with inflight updates
on weather conditions and hazards. It is now used
for larger aircraft and rotorcraft to support scientific missions
and commercial air transport.

NASA test flights last month used Planet
to help demonstrate future technology and procedures
aimed at improving air traffic flow into busy airports.
Planet was key to improving realtime coordination,
communication and data exchange via satellite
between aircraft and NASA ground staff.

Major research institutions such as
the DLR German Aerospace Center
now routinely use the service
in their atmospheric research.

This often involves several aircraft flying
simultaneously in the same area with multiple
instruments taking measurements.
Using Planet, aircraft can be better coordinated
based on information transmitted in real time to the ground.

The major benefit is being able to access
the information gathered during the mission before the aircraft lands.
Measuring icing at high altitude

Similarly, Airbus has used Planet in Asia, Europe
and North America to study the formation
of ice crystals on aircraft at high altitude.
In addition to realtime coordination,
Planet delivered colour-enhanced infrared satellite imagery
and icing maps in real time to make
the icing encounters as productive as possible.

Inmarsat and Honeywell used Planet as part
of their GX Aviation World Tour to check
their new wifi service for passengers
before it is offered through commercial airlines.

“Even though this is a niche market
we have secured important customers
and are encouraged by the increasing number of enquiries,”
noted Jean-Marc Gaubert, CEO at Atmosphere.

ESA’s Davide Tomassini commented,
“We are delighted that Atmosphere’s Planet satcom service
has become so established and so valued among
their new customers.”

Recently a delegation from the Japanese Space Agency
(JAXA) visited the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF)
as part of their tour of ESTEC. The CDF has previously
worked closely with JAXA on a number of studies
and even had a JAXA engineer embedded
in the Systems Division for several months.

Therefore the JAXA delegation which consisted
of engineers and managers, were aware of the CDF
and its capabilities which made the presentation
and discussion more focussed on interoperability
and common tools and shared processes.
JAXA has also experimented with concurrent
engineering techniques and were interested
in the ESA experience with the new Open Concurrent
Design Tool and how this allows ESA
to collaborate with other design centres working
towards a common design.

After completion of its vibration and acoustic
testing in March, the James Webb Space Telescope
– JWST – is shown here undergoing a detailed ‘lights out’

This is a special type of visual inspection
to check for any forms of contamination.
Both bright white LEDs and UV lights are used
in order to better search for possible contamination,
with the lights inside the cleanroom switched off
to improve the contrast.

The low lighting means the image had
to be taken with a longer than normal exposure time.
This makes the technicians appear somewhat ghostly
as they moved about the cleanroom during the exposure.

The image shows the segmented
and gold-coated primary mirror of the telescope,
which has a diameter of about 6.5 m when unfolded.
It consists of 18 hexagonal segments,
which will work together
as one gigantic state-of-the-art mirror.

In order to fit inside the Ariane 5 rocket
that will boost it into space, some segments
will be folded, which will then open in orbit.

By the end of April, the telescope
and the instruments will be shipped
from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
in Maryland to Johnson’s Space Center
in Texas where, over the course of the summer,
it will go through final cryogenic-temperature testing.

JWST is joint project of NASA, ESA
and the Canadian Space Agency,
and is scheduled for launch in October 2018
from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Mais, nourri par la culture new age, la beat generation et la fascination pour le chamanisme, les paroles de chansons des Doors regorgent de fulgurances philosophiques. Sans oublier la poésie de Jim Morrison et les interviews qu”il a donnés. Au-delà de ce pétrissement de Jim Morrison par la culture de son époque, le chanteur des Doors disposait aussi d’une solide culture classique : il a étudié Nietzsche, Huxley, un admirateur de la poésie de Rimbaud, un fervent lecteur de Céline, et un passionné des films de la nouvelle vague française (Godard, Truffaut) . Bref, Morrison a tout d’un intellectuel classique, avant de devenir la rock-star qu’il est devenu pour les générations suivantes (il vivait d’ailleurs assez mal le fait que sa poésie ne soit considérée que comme un caprice de rock-star, avant d’être publiée dans le New York Times dans les années 80 …)

L’histoire de la philosophie a été faite par les principaux philosophes,
avant tout en Occident (mais pas seulement).

Les Philosophes de l’Antiquité ont fondé la notion
de rationalité et ont apporté la logique (base du raisonnement),
les fondements de la réflexion politique et les éléments de la vie bonne.
Les philosophes grecs et romains les plus célèbres sont:
Platon, Aristote, Socrate, Epicure et Epictète,
sans oublier les présocratiques (Parménide, Anaxogore, Héraclite, …)

Les philosophes du Moyen-Age ont pensé avec Dieu
en toile de fond. Politique et subjectivité ont été traité
par le prisme de la pensée de Dieu. C’est sans doute
pour cette raison que le Moyen-Age n’est pas la période
la plus “philosophique”. Saint Augustin
et Thomas d’Aquin ont été les plus grands penseurs.

Les philosophes de la Renaissance sont encore marqués
par Dieu, mais l’humanisme prédomine :
More, Machiavel, Montaigne
ou encore Erasme ont placé
l’homme au centre de la réflexion philosophique.

Au 17ème siècle, les philosophes radicalisent
encore l’approche de la Renaissance
en approfondissant l’humanisme: Descartes en tête,
fera de la subjectivité le cadre indépassable de la philosophie.
Hobbes, Locke et Bacon en Angleterre révolutionnent
la pensée politique en inventant le libéralisme politique
et le despotisme éclairé). Leibniz, en Allemagne,
s’est fait l’interprète de Descartes.

Au 18è siècle, siècle des Lumières,
les philosophes ont révolutionné l’approche philosophique :
politique, esthétique et métaphysique sont pensées
désormais sans référence à Dieu. Rousseau, Voltaire
en France; Kant, Fichte en Allemagne ou encore Smith
en Angleterre ont placé l’homme au-dessus de tout,
le rendant capable d’organiser lui-même son monde.
L’homme sort de l’état de nature métaphysique
dans lequel le Moyen-Age l’avait placé.

Le 19ème siècle, siècle Romantique, apparaît
comme une régression de ce point de vue :
Hegel réintroduit l’Esprit (sorte de Dieu chez Hegel)
mais Kierkegaard, philosophe danois, et Nietzsche,
penseur allemand, viendront battre en brèche
la philosophie de Hegel et la pensée systématique.
Kierkegaard annoncera ainsi l’existentialisme en pensant
l’homme comme un être libre, et Nietzsche en défendant
la radicale solitude de l’homme et en annonçant
le Surhomme. Marx, de son côté, remettra aussi
en cause l’idéalisme de Hegel en affirmant
la primauté du matérialisme.

Le 20ème siècle est un siècle majeur
de philosophie, difficilement synthétisable
en quelques phrases. L’existentialisme (Sartre, Heidegger, Camus) ,
la phénoménologie, la théorie psychanalytique,
le structuralisme, le féminisme,
la théorie critique, la déconstruction
et la philosophie analytique
sont les courants contemporains majeurs.

Je regarde le temps différemment après la mort de Athéna la chatte Bleue.
De longues années à voyager; à travailler et à écrire... Tel un Spartiate, je me suis emprunt à une apogée sur la compréhension du monde qui m'entourai de ses richesses; J' y ai rencontré des lueurs, des affronts et des forces.

Je regarde celle qui a su réveiller la force de réveiller ces écrits que j'ai voulu sauvegarder par le fait que après
tout, aide toi et le ciel te répondra: Et je dois dire que ma volonté fut exaucer... Alors je regarde Minouska, une chatte qui a recueilli mon cœur en lambeau lors de la guerre ou intifada, si vous préférez:

Le Juge Suprême de la république de l'Olivier est un personnage
qui doit s'informer et accueillir la Parole de l'un et de l'Autre. Il se doit d'écrire des vers, des proverbes, des espoirs, des fables car notre peuple aime cela: Ni fouet, ni chaines ! être sérieux devant les nuages gris !
Car l'arbre peur garantir notre fraternité et la justice de l'eau propager la diversités des écritures des forets donc vers la connaissance et Yahvé... Y'becca est soumis à toujours suivre un dossier médical, on ne peut se reposer sur des radios anciennes et toutes opérations auquel Lise Verdier ne peut être bâclé... Certains medecins oublient d'osculter la gorge quand un patien à une fiévre... Il est des gestes de précautions auquel la médecine n'a pas la droit de s'occulter... Y'becca doit répondre à ces faits là et son secouriste ne doit jamais dire jamais sur le fait que l'expérience ne donne jamais d'acquis et il est une chose auquel je voue une grande discipline et rigueur: Celle d'entendre la Prudence lorsque le temps le permet... quel que soit l'opération, on agit avec prudence du temps, de l'aspect et des allergies possibles auquel le patient ou la patiente peut être soumis en fonction de son age et de sa corpulence...
